About Us

Toyama Bay was inducted into the UNESCO-supported Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club in October 2014. We believe that this is an appreciation of the balanced coexistence of the natural environment including a magnificent view of the Tateyama Mountain Range and economic activities such as fishery, industry, commerce and tourism.

Of course, this is thanks to the exceptional natural environment that has a 4,000-meter height difference from the 3,000-meter-high Tateyama Mountain Range to the 1,000-meter-deep Toyama Bay. At the same time, this environment is a treasure maintained by constant efforts of our predecessors, who have controlled collapsing mountains and flooding rivers, invented the fixed net fishing to protect marine ecology, and attracted the only college of maritime technology in the Sea of Japan Coast to foster human resources living in the seaside region.

While we must pass down this treasure to future generations, circumstances surrounding Toyama Bay is changing drastically. We are facing changes in ecological system due to global warming, natural disasters such as tornados, heavy rains and storms that are far worse than past records, and increasing amounts of indecomposable trash like plastics. In addition to these considerable changes in the environment, people involved in the sea are steadily aging. In the last 20 years, the number of fishery workers in Toyama prefecture has declined from more than 3,000 to below 2,000, more than half of which are over 60 years old. Also, people who enjoy marine leisure such as yachting have few young successors.

Our mission is as follows:
-To rediscover the value of Toyama Bay that has been internationally recognized, using the participation in the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club and the opening of Hokuriku Shinkansen, a high-speed bullet train, as opportunities.
-To take actions to enhance the value of Toyama Bay, which has been preserved and developed by our predecessors, and make it globally viable.
-To pass down the value to our successors.

We have established the Beautiful Toyama Bay Club as a fan club of Toyama Bay. Cooperating with local residents, we strive to make Toyama Bay a stronger brand and provide information about its features so that visitors from home and abroad will enjoy the bay more and that people involved in the bay can be more proud of their asset.
